He has experience in residential, commercial and institutional design as sole proprietor of the firm he started in 1995. In May of 2000, he merged his practice with Benjamin Cahoon and Associates to form Cahoon & Kasten, Architects. His work includes new construction as well as renovations and remodels of existing structures. He has experience in office design (both municipal and commercial), medical facility design, restaurant and kitchen planning, shopping center and mall design and single family housing design. Other areas of expertise include hurricane resistant design and historic preservation. EMPLOYMENT HISTORY: Cahoon & Kasten, Architects, Nags Head, NC, May, 2000-Present The merger of two sole proprietorships, Benjamin Cahoon & Associates, AIA and Mark Arey Kasten Architect, AIA, resulted in the formation of Cahoon & Kasten, Architects in May of 2000. Mark Arey Kasten Architect, AIA, Nags Head, NC 1995 – April, 2000 Established firm operating with one draftsperson. Responsible for all aspects of business, design and support of production staff. Projects included residential, commercial and institutional design. As project architect on all jobs, designed projects in accordance with owner’s program and within budget. Provided preliminary design and prepared construction documents for draftspersons to produce CAD drawings. Other responsibilities as needed by client included obtaining required permits, preparing written specifications, coordinating PM&E engineers, bidding and observing construction. Cape Hatteras Group, National Park Service, Manteo, NC 1994 - 1996 Architectural Technician. Provided design, cost estimating, construction documents and site inspections for in-house construction projects as well as for bid purposes. Projects included visitor facilities, museum modifications and historic preservation. Also provided material procurement, ADA compliance review and supervision of construction labor.
